Sermanthang is a beautiful village located north of Kathmandu, which invites thousands of tourists every year to learn about itself and its citizen. Being part of the Climate Trek Nepal, a model lodge regarding eco-friendliness will come into being at the beginning of 2019.
The lodge has been in development progress using carbon neutral and natural materials such as hempcrete (used for all external and some internal walls made of Hemp), local wood, stones and lime. Along with that, the lodge’s reconstruction engineering also pursues low energy consumption. Therefore, under floor heating systems with hot water, double-gazed windows and insulation will be installed. Of course, atmosfair will equip this lodge with renewable energy technologies. Further, only organic food shall be served when being a guest in this lodge. To improve the water budget, rainwater will be harvested and used for the toilets and the kitchen garden.
Another remarkable part of the ecofriendly model lodge is its intention to become an education and training center for different target groups. Mr. Gopal Lama, the owner of the lodge and director of Yangrima Community School, wants to improve the educational conditions for the village’s children. The income generated during the operation of the model lodge is intended to help run a community school. Moreover, it will benefit a hostel where orphans live who are studying in the community school. It also assumes to offer hotel management skills courses to the children, enhancing the employment opportunities for the kids after graduating.
